Oceanicasub X - Returning a UR 712L Vessel to Service
Originally built as the anchor handling tug support vessel Far Sabre, Oceanicasub X was acquired by Oceanica as a part of its expanding offshore support fleet. The vessel was taken over in laid-up condition in March 2023 and underwent a comprehensive reactivation program under Tschudi Ship Management's technical supervision before entering service in Brazil.
From lay-up to offshore operations
Following the acquisition, the vessel completed class renewal docking and extensive rehabilitation works covering propulsion, machinery and deck equipment. The purpose of the project was to transform a laid-up UT 712L platform into an operational subsea support asset capable of supporting ROV and offshore intervention activities.
The reactivation program included extensive work on the vessel's technical systems, ensuring operational reliability ahead of deployment to Brazilian offshore projects.
Technical scope
The project included:
- Reactivation from lay-up condition
- Class renewal surveys and dry-docking
- Full propulsion and machinery overhauls
- Overhaul of deck equipment, cranes and winches by Kongsberg
- Installation of a mission-specific mezzanine deck
- ROV support container arrangements
- Main crane installation
- Operational readiness preparations for deployment in Brazil
Supporting subsea operations
The completed modifications enabled Oceanicasub X to support subsea and ROV operations while extending the operational life of an existing offshore asset. Rather than commissioning a newbuild vessel, Oceanica selected a reactivation and upgrade program that returned an established UT 712L design to active service.
Oceanicasub X departed Norway for Brazil towards the end of 2023, joining Oceanica's growing subsea support fleet and contributing to a wider program of vessel reactivations and conversions carried out in cooperation with Tschudi Ship Management.
