In the fast-paced realm of maritime management, where time is a precious resource and decisions carry immense weight, the role of a Technical Superintendent stands out for its exceptional demands. Valmar has excelled in his role as a Technical Superintendent at Tschudi Ship Management for more than a decade. With this extensive experience, he generously shares his insights, including both the highs and lows of his journey.

The vessel management sector is often associated with elevated stress levels. “Typically, situations where you can't resolve issues in a timely manner tend to be the most stressful,” explains Valmar. Stress surfaces when meticulously planned schedules are disrupted by unforeseen issues. Instances such as delayed deliveries of essential spare parts can threaten the course of a project. So, the Technical Superintendent's quick thinking and ability to develop alternative solutions prove to be invaluable.

Effective and clear communication is the keystone in any area and as well as in the shipping industry. Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including crewmembers, chief engineers, and upper management, needs adept communication skills. “There might be a situation where the spare part has been ordered, but on the vessel, it appears still to be sitting at a warehouse,” says Valmar. That is why there needs to be a communication line set up, so that the process flows smoothly. “I am already used to it and basically waiting when some thing is going to come up,” says Valmar jokingly.

When all communication and plans fail, you need to be ready to handle the aftermath. These situations are usually quite stressful for superintendents and other crewmembers. While experience engenders confidence, recognizing the limits of one's knowledge is equally important. “What might be stressful for one crew member might not be stressful for another. It really depends on the experience, how and if you've handled this situation before," explains Valmar with ease. He, as an experienced superintendent, is very calm with all the unexpected situations.

While staying calm and finding balance is often crucial in stressful situations, it always depends on the nationality as well. In an industry with a global footprint, understanding and respecting cultural distinctions are paramount. Varying nationalities and cultures approach problem-solving and stress management uniquely. "Sometimes, giving a gentle push to a crew member is what gets things done," says Valmar. Acknowledging and honouring these differences foster harmonious collaborations, adding a layer of sophistication to the professional landscape.

In a world where time is as valuable as money, and precision is an absolute requirement, Technical Superintendents become essential figures. Despite the many challenges and high-pressure situations, their unwavering commitment, extensive experience, and adaptability serve as the foundation ensuring the seamless operation of the global maritime industry. In this delicate balance between technology and tradition, they stand as guiding lights, helping organizations navigate the complexities of their voyage.

Valmar currently oversees all the refits and reactivations of our managed Oceanica Netherlands B.V. vessels as well as the Danish Offshore Supply vessels Vantage and Veritas at BLRT.
